Trump skipping Martin Luther King Jr. Day - not participating in any of its activities
President Donald Trump is not doing anything for Martin Luther King Jr. day according to the official White House schedule.
It officially reads: "no public events scheduled."
Trump hasn't said anything on the subject yet but sent out an unrelated tweet moments ago calling all the people not getting paid by his government shutdown "great patriots."
Maybe that's why he isn't celebrating? Nah. That can't be it.
More on the subject - Vice President Pence took the liberty this weekend to invoke the late Dr. King by twisting his words to sell America a border wall. That shocked many.
“The hearts and minds of the American people today are thinking a lot about it being the weekend we are remembering the life and the work of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.,” Pence told host Margaret Brennan. “One of my favorite quotes from Dr. King was, ‘Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.’ You think of how he changed America, he inspired us to change through the legislative process.”
King wasn't a fan of walls. While King didn't have a political opinion of the Mexican border wall, he did however come out against the Berlin wall and given that speech, it's highly unlikely he would have approved of Pence quoting him for this purpose.
“It is indeed an honor to be in this city, which stands as a symbol of the divisions of men on the face of the earth,” King told East Berliners. “For here on either side of the wall are God’s children and no man-made barrier can obliterate that fact.”
It will remain to be seen what Trump will do on MLK Jr. day but expect some meager tweet from him and not much else.
