Trump refuses to attend NAACP event because they'll ask him 'questions'
Trump is skipping a presidential candidate forum on Wednesday put on by the NAACP, one of America's most venerable and revered civil rights organizations, at its annual convention.
"Unfortunately, they want to do it in the form of a question and answer," Trump said last Thursday, explaining why he was snubbing the group. He insisted that he "very much wanted to go," but apparently unless the NAACP allowed him to speak unchallenged, he was not interested.
At least 10 presidential candidates have confirmed their attendance at the forum. Unlike Trump, they don't appear to have a problem with defending their positions.
Five of the Democratic candidates currently leading in national polls will appear, including former Vice President Joe Biden, Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and Kamala Harris (D-CA), and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, along with others.
Even one of his fellow Republicans, former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, will attend.
It seems Trump has intentionally been avoiding the NAACP. He skipped the same event held by the NAACP in 2016 as well, in a shift from the previous Republican presidential nominee, Mitt Romney, who went to the convention in 2012, and John McCain, who went in 2008.
Trump is currently engaged in another racist campaign, using the presidency to attack four Democratic congresswomen of color by telling them to "go back" to where they came from. All four women are American citizens.
The NAACP on Tuesday voted to support Trump's impeachment, with all delegates to the annual convention backing the measure.
"Trump's misconduct is unmistakable and has proven time and time again that he is unfit to serve this country," said NAACP President Derrick Johnson.
Trump would in all likelihood be challenged for his racism by NAACP members and face skeptical questioning that his administration has studiously avoided. So instead of manning up, he ran away.
