Trump offers 'large sums' to German company for exclusive access to Covid-19 vaccine

Right now, President Donald Trump and his administration is offering a German medical company extremely large sums of money for exclusive access to a Covid-19 vaccine, according to German media.

The reports allege that Trump wants to secure the vaccine "for the US only." This is highly unethical in our opinion. The entire world needs this vaccine.

The idea is so outrageous, the German government is intervening in trying to stop the company from moving its research lab to the United States.

"The German government is very interested in ensuring that vaccines and active substances against the new coronavirus are also developed in Germany and Europe,” a Health Ministry spokeswoman said.

“In this regard, the government is in intensive exchange with the company CureVac,” she added.

Karl Lauterbach, a senior lawmaker with Germany's social Democrats, sounded her outrage on social media:

“The exclusive sale of a possible vaccine to the USA must be prevented by all means. Capitalism has limits.”

Earlier in the month, CureVac's CEO Daniel Menichella, a U.S. citizen, met with Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. They were probably close to securing a deal due to their connections with him, but CureVac's founder, Ingmar Hoerr, has just replaced him. This unexpected shakeup is most likely due to the US trying to takeover the company.

Whatever the outcome of this, the US and Germany should be working together to develop the vaccine for the world. Where the research lab is located shouldn't matter.
