Lindsey Graham just threatened the entire Republican Party for Trump, talks of civil war
Senator Lindsey Graham, an ally of President Trump on most things, is acting like the president's personal whipping boy right now.
On Monday, Graham issued a warning to his fellow Republicans on Capitol Hill, telling them that they better back Trump if he declares a national emergency to build the border wall with Mexico, or else:
"To every Republican, if you don’t stand behind this president, we’re not going to stand behind you, when it comes to the wall," Graham said. "This is the defining moment of his presidency. It’s not just about a wall, it’s about him being treated different than every other president."
Graham said that this will create a "war within the Republican Party over the wall."
The senator spoke with his constituents at the Poinsett Club in Greenville, S.C.
Here's what is going on: Trump called off the longest shutdown in government history with the hope that he and Congress can someone strike a deal. Graham says that's not going to happen so Republicans coming together before Feb 15. (the next shutdown date) is what is going to need to happen. Trump doesn't want another shutdown and sees this as his only option. "This is about more than a barrier. This is about us as a party," he said.
Even if Trump does declare an emergency and gets his way, it could ultimately be challenged in court. This might be why Trump hasn't done it yet and considers it just a last resort.
Graham also offered another reason for backing Trump, saying there's "no excuse not to have this president’s back now, because we’re not doing anything exotic here."
